2012 Olympics
Anyone planning on going to the UK for the 2012 Olympics ? I'm seriously considering it. Be great to take a side trip to France and Ireland as well. The first step is to get wifey Rachel....a passport.

Who'd have thought.......
I amaze me! I'm the last person who'd 'volunteer' to be a 'human Guinea pig'. Well, I'm one. Yes. Me!
Now, before you get all bent out of shape....allow me to explain. Several years ago my late wife was in a Rehab hospital (D'Ouville) in Cambridge, MA. She had to be weined off of a respirator, having been given a trach. She was one of countless millions of tobacco addicts waiting for the "grim Reaper." I spent every possible moment at her side because (1.) I dearly loved her and (2.) I knew it was a matter of time when she'd leave me.
It was while I was at her bedside one day when one of her attending doctors asked if I'd consider being a part of a large study. It had to do with seeing if fish oil and vitamin D worked to prevent or reduce the risk of certain cancers....over five years. As much for my wife as for myself, I consented.
Much has happened over the past several years. Shortly after Maggie passed, I packed many of her belongings and sent them to her relatives in Ireland. I moved with the help of God, who knew I'd had my share of 'drama', and the help of a wonderful woman who lives as far from the place Maggie'd died as one could get and still be in the states. I signed up for part time work through the ABLE program, an excellent program to help place seniors in meaningful work situations. The pay is minimum wage but it helps and it keeps an old fart like me 'busy'. I work ten hours a week at an arts center and find it very rewarding. I recently married again and am enjoying that as well, not that I'm a dirty, old man, you understand. I just enjoy an occasional meal out, a walk in the park and someone to share a church pew with. I need not mention Izayah, my adopted ten year son who is expert in everything "Scooby-Do"...but not his homework. And then there's Miss Tacy, a little four-legged Hoover vacuum cleaner. Part Schitzou, part Bishon-Freeze, she thinks she rules the world.
Well, when I got in from the arts center today, there was a box the mailman had left at the door for me. It was from "Vital Study, Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, 900 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 02215. When I got the box inside and opened it, there was a 6 month supply of pills I'm supposed to take for the next five years.
I opened the card, went to the 15th of the month and took the two pills. Within an hour, I began to feel strange 'down there'. Well I'll be! Howard Johnson was as solid as a rock, to quote Ashford and Simpson. When I called in to Vital, I was told it was in all likelyhood a "temporary side effect." How nice, thought I. Who'd have thought......(smile, smile, smile).

Today, Wednesday, July 13th, 2011, has been a pretty good day as days go. I awoke to a great sunrise, had my usual bowl of oatmeal with frozen Blueberries and a big cup of joe.(coffee)
While I dined, I logged on to Facebook and discovered I have more 'friends' than I know what to do with. I noticed there were 35 folks available to me to 'chat' with if I wanted to. But I simply ate, drank and went back to bed. It was 5:00AM.
I am somewhat of a newly-wed so I had other things to do.
We are blessed, if you want to call it that, to have twins we're looking after, a couple of little three-year old tots who love to ask why to everything that comes out of ones mouth. They awake and hit the ground running....literally. Thank Goodness for Geritol lest I could never keep up. Add to this a ten year old boy who has very 'selective' hearing. Together they make me wish I were a 'drinking man'. Just joking.
Some time ago I took out a family membership at a local fitness club, one that has an adequate pool. We try to get our money's worth. Amazingly, it seems to have helped most of my aches and pains, even the three mentioned above. I'm hoping to expand my use of the facilities in the coming weeks and months.
Well, I think I'll sign out for now. It's been over three years since I updated this space. My life has been altered considerably by the death of a much loved wife and the recent marriage to another. I hate eating my oatmeal all alone. (smile) Maybe now I can post upbeat things here that for the last three years I couldn't. I was watching a beloved slip slowly away. We'll see.

Nine Eleven, 2008
I just finished mourning the senseless loss of life and property seven years ago. I'm not a finger-pointer by nature but I'll be damned if someone wasn't asleep at the wheel.
I get so pissed that it's hard to express it. We go on rewarding people who distract us so that they can rob us blind. We promote folks who put the greater good in the trash and feather their nests. We open our hearts and our wallets......to crooks. In the name of peace and security, we war because war will bring peace and security. We permit injustice because, we're told, this will insure both freedom and justice.
And the question is: Are we really any safer than we were seven years ago? Are we any closer to capturing the master-minds of the events seven years ago? After all the lives that have been lost, the wounds that will never heal, the billions that have been spent, the harm that has been done.....are we any better off than we were seven years ago?
Or are the same drivers still asleep at the wheel?
